Mammut - from Switzerland to the world

Mammut is a long-extinct animal from the Ice Age and has long been synonymous with first-class mountain sports equipment and clothing. Since its founding in 1862, the Swiss company has built a reputation for ultimate reliability, adventurous spirit, and innovation. Whether mountaineering and climbing in summer or ski touring in winter, the products stand for the highest quality that can withstand even the most demanding conditions.

How did Mammut come to make ropes?

If you ask yourself why an extinct animal is used as the brand logo, the facts are apparent: the prehistoric animal embodies power and strength - and it is precisely these benefits that make Swiss ropes perfect for use in the most challenging conditions. With the further development of rope-making away from purely agricultural use, the first mammoth was put on a rope in 1943. The Mammut Everest rope followed a few years later - the first rope with a core-sheath structure. It was at this time that the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA for short) certified the very first rope; and of course it was a Mammut climbing rope!

Mammut avalanche beacon equipment, clothing & co: more than just ropes

The mountain sports outfitter is now known for much more. In addition to the first clothing collection in the 1970s, this period also saw the development of the legendary Barryvox VS 68 avalanche transceiver. A star is born because, with the further development of this device, Mammut is still a great candidate for avalanche transceiver equipment today. The early precision, expertise, and Swiss quality standards are also reflected here. With the acquisition of the traditional company Raichle in 2003, Mammut finally completed its portfolio: equipment, clothing, and footwear - it is no coincidence that Mammut hiking boots, rain jackets, and sleeping bags are extremely popular with outdoor enthusiasts today.

However, it is not only the breadth of the product range that has been optimized but also the quality and specifications. The first Eiger Extreme series 1995 set a real milestone for alpine mountaineering. This collection is a must-have for anyone traveling in the high mountains or on north faces! With lines such as the lightweight Eiger Speed for new speed records or the new Eiger Free for the most challenging freeride descents, Mammut hits the nail on the head regarding niche expertise. The traditional company seems to be more innovative and tireless than textiles from almost any other manufacturer in the mountain sports sector.

Mammut: Made with love for the mountains

Mammut is not only characterized by robustness and strength but also by the manufacturer's sustainability efforts. And these are another reason why Mammut is so popular with outdoor fans. The brand was one of the first in the industry to recognize the importance of sustainability and is actively committed to more environmentally friendly production methods and materials. Mammut developed its first PET-recycled fleece back in 1995. In addition, PCF-free fabrics and organic cotton are just a few examples of the clothing brand's sustainable practices.

Mammut is committed to a comprehensive climate strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using renewable energies, and implementing circular economy models. The "Close the Loop" program, developed in collaboration with Protect Our Winters Switzerland, focuses on recycling climbing ropes and taking them back. In addition, attention is paid to the reparability and durability of the products to extend their useful life and thus conserve resources.

In addition to a sustainability report, Mammut published its first social report in 2019, focussing on transparency and responsibility along its supply chain. The brand emphasizes these values with its membership in the Fair Wear Foundation. Measures such as relocating production facilities in China to countries such as Vietnam and Bangladesh, where the majority of production now takes place, are intended to make working conditions more transparent gradually.
